Cyprus is one of the sunniest islands in the Mediterranean — with over 320 days of sunshine per year, it is genuinely a year-round destination. But the best time to visit depends on what you want to do. Beach holidays are best from May through October. Hiking and sightseeing are more comfortable in spring and autumn. And winter brings a unique combination of snow in the Troodos Mountains and mild temperatures on the coast.
Cyprus Weather Overview
Cyprus has a Mediterranean climate — hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 35°C in July and August. The coast is cooled by sea breezes, but inland (particularly in Nicosia) it can be extremely hot. Winter temperatures on the coast average 15–18°C — mild enough for outdoor activities but too cool for swimming.
Spring (March–May): Best for Hiking and Sightseeing
Spring is one of the best times to visit Cyprus. Temperatures are warm but not scorching (18–25°C), the countryside is green and wildflower-covered, and the tourist crowds are manageable.\n\nMarch and April are excellent for hiking in the Troodos Mountains and the Akamas Peninsula. The Akamas in spring, with its wildflowers and sea views, is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the eastern Mediterranean.\n\nMay is the beginning of beach season — the sea reaches 22°C and the days are long and sunny. Prices are below peak summer rates and the resorts are not yet crowded.
Summer (June–August): Peak Beach Season
Summer is the most popular time to visit Cyprus and the hottest. July and August temperatures regularly reach 38–40°C inland. The coast is more bearable with sea breezes, but it is genuinely very hot.\n\nThe beaches are at their best — the sea is warm (26–28°C), the days are long, and the resort towns of Ayia Napa, Protaras, Limassol, and Paphos are fully operational. Ayia Napa in July and August is one of the most popular party destinations in the Mediterranean.\n\nBook accommodation well in advance for July and August — the island fills up, particularly the beach resorts.
Autumn (September–October): The Sweet Spot
September and October are arguably the best months to visit Cyprus. The summer heat has eased (25–30°C), the sea is still warm (24–26°C), the crowds have thinned, and prices drop significantly from August levels.\n\nOctober is excellent for a combination of beach and sightseeing — warm enough to swim, cool enough to explore Nicosia, the Troodos villages, and the ancient sites of Kourion and Paphos without overheating.
Winter (November–February): Mild Coast, Snow in the Mountains
Cyprus in winter is unique in the Mediterranean — you can ski in the Troodos Mountains in the morning and sit on a sunny terrace on the coast in the afternoon. The Troodos ski resort (Mount Olympus, 1,952m) typically has snow from January through March.\n\nCoastal temperatures in winter average 15–18°C — mild enough for walking, cycling, and sightseeing, but too cool for swimming. Winter is the cheapest time to visit and the island feels genuinely local rather than tourist-dominated.
