Poland is a year-round destination with a genuinely distinct character in every season. The medieval cities of Krakow and Gdansk are beautiful in summer and atmospheric in winter. The Tatra Mountains offer hiking in summer and skiing in winter. And Warsaw, one of Europe's most dynamic capitals, rewards visitors in any season. Here's when to go.
Poland Weather Overview
Poland has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers (June–August) are warm and sunny, averaging 22–28°C. Winters (December–February) are cold, with temperatures regularly below freezing and snowfall common. Spring and autumn are mild and often beautiful. The south (Krakow, Tatra Mountains) tends to be colder in winter and warmer in summer than the north.
Spring (March–May): City Breaks and Countryside
Spring is one of the best times to visit Poland's cities. Krakow, Warsaw, and Gdansk come alive as the weather warms, outdoor café culture returns, and the parks fill with blossom.\n\nApril and May are excellent. Temperatures reach 14–20°C, the tourist crowds are manageable, and accommodation prices are below summer peak. The Tatra Mountains in May, with the snow melting and the alpine flowers blooming, are particularly beautiful.
Summer (June–August): Peak Season
Summer is the most popular time to visit Poland. The long days, warm temperatures, and outdoor festival culture make it the most enjoyable season.\n\nKrakow in summer is at its most vibrant — the Old Town is buzzing, the Wawel Castle gardens are open, and the Jewish Quarter (Kazimierz) hosts the Jewish Culture Festival (late June/early July), one of the most important Jewish cultural events in Europe.\n\nGdansk in summer is excellent — the Baltic coast beaches are busy, the Old Town is beautiful, and the city's maritime heritage is on full display.\n\nBook accommodation well in advance for July and August, particularly in Krakow.
Autumn (September–November): Golden Season
September and October are excellent months to visit Poland. The summer crowds thin, prices drop, and the autumn foliage in the Tatra Mountains and the Bialowieza Forest is spectacular.\n\nOctober is one of the best months for hiking in the Tatras — the summer crowds have gone, the weather is still reasonable, and the mountain colours are extraordinary. November is quieter and greyer, but the Christmas market preparations begin in late November.
Winter (December–February): Christmas Markets and Skiing
Poland in December is magical. Krakow's Christmas market on the Main Market Square is one of the most beautiful in Europe. Warsaw's Christmas markets are also excellent.\n\nSkiing — The Tatra Mountains (Zakopane) offer good skiing from December through March. Zakopane is Poland's most popular winter resort and has a charming, traditional atmosphere.\n\nJanuary and February are the coldest months — temperatures can drop to -15°C in Krakow and Warsaw. But the cities are atmospheric and accommodation prices are at their lowest.
