Best Time to Visit Portugal: Month-by-Month Guide (2026)

10 min read June 2026 EasyTrip Editorial Team

Portugal is one of Europe's most rewarding year-round destinations. The country enjoys more sunshine than almost anywhere else in Western Europe, the food and wine are exceptional, and it remains better value than Spain, France, or Italy for comparable quality. But the best time to visit depends on where you're going and what you want to do. This guide breaks it all down.

Portugal Weather Overview

Portugal has three distinct climate zones. Lisbon and central Portugal enjoy a Mediterranean climate — hot, dry summers (25–35°C) and mild, wet winters (10–15°C). The Algarve in the south is the warmest and driest region, with over 300 days of sunshine per year and summer temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C. Porto and northern Portugal are cooler and wetter, particularly in winter, with a climate closer to northern Spain than the Mediterranean south.

Spring (March–May): The Sweet Spot

Spring is widely considered the best time to visit Portugal. Temperatures are warm but not scorching (18–24°C in Lisbon, 15–20°C in Porto), the countryside is green and wildflower-covered, and the tourist crowds are a fraction of summer levels.

March and April are particularly good for Lisbon and Porto — the cities are at their most manageable, accommodation prices are reasonable, and the light is beautiful. The Algarve in spring is excellent for walking and cycling along the coastal paths before the summer heat arrives.

May is arguably the best single month to visit Portugal. Temperatures are reliably warm, the days are long, the beaches are uncrowded, and prices are still below peak summer rates.

Summer (June–August): Peak Season

Summer is the busiest and most expensive time to visit Portugal. The Algarve in July and August is one of the most popular beach destinations in Europe — accommodation books up months in advance and prices are at their highest.

Lisbon in summer is hot (often 35°C+) and crowded. The city's famous trams and viewpoints (miradouros) are packed with tourists. That said, the long evenings, outdoor dining, and beach access (Cascais and Estoril are 30 minutes from Lisbon by train) make it a genuinely enjoyable summer city.

June is the best summer month — the weather is excellent, the crowds are slightly smaller than July/August, and the Festas de Lisboa (the city's biggest street festival, celebrating St Anthony) fills the Alfama neighbourhood with sardine grills, music, and dancing throughout the month.

Autumn (September–November): Excellent Value

September is one of the best months to visit Portugal. The summer crowds have thinned, the sea is still warm (around 22°C in the Algarve), and prices drop noticeably from August levels. The light in September and October is particularly beautiful — golden and soft.

October is ideal for Lisbon and Porto — warm enough for outdoor dining (18–22°C), quiet enough to enjoy the museums and viewpoints without queuing, and the wine harvest (vindima) in the Douro Valley makes it a wonderful time to visit the wine country.

November is quieter and wetter, particularly in Porto, but Lisbon remains pleasant and the off-season prices make it excellent value.

Winter (December–February): City Breaks and Mild Escapes

Portugal's winters are the mildest in mainland Europe. Lisbon averages 15°C in January — warmer than London in summer. The Algarve in winter is genuinely pleasant for walking and golf, with temperatures of 16–18°C and far fewer tourists than any other time of year.

Winter is the best time for a city break in Lisbon or Porto — no queues, low prices, and the cities feel authentically local rather than tourist-dominated. Porto's Christmas markets and Lisbon's New Year celebrations are both worth experiencing.

The one downside: some beach facilities and coastal restaurants close from November through March, and the Atlantic can be rough for swimming.
